Learning to read is personal.
So is my approach to teaching it.
I target the main facets of reading acquisition: decoding, fluency, and comprehension.
-
Decoding
Decoding is the ability to sound out words. Phonics instruction builds students' foundational literacy skills, and helps them learn to decode words. I use the Wilson Reading System for phonics instruction, which is one of the most effective curricula for literacy intervention.
-
Fluency
Reading fluency is the ability to read a text accurately, with expression, at an appropriate pace. I use a variety of research-based techniques to improve students’ precision, prosody, and reading rate, and to help them become more fluent readers.
-
Comprehension
Reading comprehension is the ability to understand what has been read, and demonstrate that understanding in various ways. I help students make meaning of complex, grade level texts, and learn to express their understanding clearly and confidently
